mental health first aid training onine course. 이번주에 끝내야 한다...

Why is Mental Health First Aid training relevant to medical students?

There are a number of reasons why medical students need to learn mental health first aid skills.

Young adults are at higher risk of depression, anxiety disorders and substance use disorders than other age groups. Tertiary students are at even higher risk than non-students of the same age of experiencing moderate levels of psychological distress, particularly younger students.

It can be particularly difficult for people training to work in a health setting. Research indicates that the following factors to can be significant stressors for medical students:

  • Volume of workload
  • Worry about academic performance
  • High-stake examinations
  • Lack of time for hobbies and recreation
  • Exposure to human suffering.

Study demands and emotional pressures can have a cumulative effect on medical students over the course of their studies and can lead to burnout. A National Mental Health Survey of doctors and medical students in 2019, found that medical students reported higher rates of general distress and specific mental health problems in comparison to the Australian population.

The stigma associated with mental health problems can be particularly difficult for people training to work in a health profession.

Medical students may believe in the adage 'Physician, heal thyself', i.e. that as a medical student, they should know how to prevent any mental health problems in themselves. They may believe that other people also believe this. Thus, health students can be afraid or ashamed to discuss mental health problems with fellow students or lecturers or to seek professional help for their mental health problems.

Medical practitioners may also face concerns around confidentiality and potential career impact.

Mental Health First Aid training can empower medical students to recognise developing signs of mental health problems, to support their patients, and peers experiencing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. The training will also help equip medical students with good mental health literacy and supportive practices as they enter the workforce.
